Living your best life is often equated to smoking, drinking, partying, fornicating, cursing, and just living anyway we please, but does that life guarantee eternity? Quite the opposite.
You see, as humans, the pleasures of life can be categorized in many ways, but the true essence of one's life should be centered around what the one who created us wants. And when you really think about it- we are quite bold faced, too. We-who didn't create ourselves and are not able to sustain ourselves daily think that we can live as we please, but the Bible urges us to choose this day who we will serve.
In reality, the Christian life isn't all sunshine, and rainbows in fact it is quite the opposite. A life filled with persecution and suffering, and you may ask, "But how is that better than pleasure?" We know that the glory that is to come is far better than what we face as sons and daughters and we are not surprised when we hard pressed on every side because Jesus told us that we will be counted as sheep for the slaughter. Luke 6 tells us to bless those who curse us and to love those who hate us, and Paul tells us that the gospel is foolishness to those who are perishing. We are free by the blood of the Lamb, but we are also slaves to Christ- ironic, isn't it? Yet, we wouldn't have it any other way because there is a peace that comes with knowing that persecution means that we are close to the cross and warfare means that the enemy is afraid of what's inside of us.
All in all, we don't chase after what we can't take to eternity, but rather, we chase after what guarantees us that. The Bible tells us that the righteous shall scarcely make it- therefore, we run with endurance the race that is set before us, leaving the life of the old man behind because a life of sin is no pleasure at all.
